#1: Cloverleaf by Charles Harriott

The cloverleaf is a great attack when trying to hit leg locks. It is an underrated submission that can be truly devastating. Check out the video below and then we will break down the technique!

This technique starts from a position where you have a leg triangle on your opponent’s leg. Take your training partner’s far leg and pull it over you while controlling it with a straight ankle lock grip. Now move to your side and plant your foot on the mat. Stay active with your leg while you squeeze your training partner’s knee. Remember that you want to make sure your training partner’s knee is flared out. This is the angle you need in order to hit the submission. From here, feed your arm in between your training partner’s legs. Now you can hit the clover leaf submission. Keep your elbow low and catch your gable grip as you go back on your side. Notice that you are using your opponent’s own shin to create the pressure that makes the submission possible. This is a very powerful submission when done correctly.

When you practice this drill you should be focused on securing inside control. Charles Harriott demonstrates what inside control is with the legs. Start off with your partner in this position. Take your hands off the floor and now take turns pummeling with your legs for inside control. This is a great exercise to warm up as well as getting used to basic pummeling to teach you inside control with your legs, and it can be made better by adding your hands in. Place your hands in a monkey grip around your opponent’s Achilles tendon. When you pummel with your legs you are required to first pass your opponent’s grips by taking your leg outwards before pummeling in. When your training partner’s elbow is over your toes you have to roll out and around his arm with your leg.
