The Crucifix Rollout

Posted by Fanatics Authors on

What’s the coolest technique you have ever learned in Jiu Jitsu?

That’s likely a tough question for most grapplers who have been training a while to answer.  They likely have a favorite, but maybe don’t even realize how often they use it or that it dominates their game.

For me one of the techniques I have always found interesting is the crucifix. It’s so impressive to me that it’s possible to have complete control over the other person to the point where all of their limbs are completely useless.  There is nothing more powerful for the attacker, and nothing more defeating as the opponent than being in a submission like this one.

Let’s take a look at the crucifix rollout by Jake Mackenzie to see what details he can provide for us on how to get out of the seemingly impossible submission.

As the opponent takes your back, we are looking to step over the opponent’s bottom hook similar to a typical back escape, this can be done by using the instep of the top foot to hook the opponent’s leg and push it forward.  It’s important to note that from here the crucifix is not a risk until the opponent is able to lock up their hands. As the opponent goes to make this connection it creates the perfect opportunity to switch our hips and go to our knees ending in a side control position with our arm still between the legs.

It’s interesting how simply knowing when to execute a simple hip switch can make all the difference in the outcome of your opponent’s attack.  It’s video clips like this that further prove anything is possible once you know the way. There are tons of attacks and escapes out there and more and more being developed each and every day, it’s just about making sure you know which one to use to get the best possible outcome.
