Bernardo Faria Hip Escape
One of the best escapes a Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner can learn is the hip escape. It is one of the most fundamental principles of jiu jitsu, working both as a mount escape and preventing side control. You will learn hip escape on your very first day of jiu jitsu and it will stick with you throughout your entire grappling career. A successful hip escape relies on some very important and crucial details to master, and when you master this your escape will change for the better. BJJ World Champion Bernardo Faria understands this well. He understands the details for a successful hip escape and if you follow them you too will develop a very high level hip escape.
There is a science to escaping bad positions in jiu jitsu. If you don't have the tools or the concepts to escape, you will waste all your energy and not get anywhere.
There are a few key details and the first one is to keep your arms close. It is a common mistake for many to reach their arms out to reach when drilling, which is a bad habit. You can still do the escape by reaching out your arms but it will not work in a realistic scenario. It is more likely that you will end up getting arm-locked quickly by anyone with an advanced understanding of BJJ. So keep those arms tight and drill that way so that when you are scrambling you do not get caught by something easy.
The second most important details is to strongly post with your leg. If you do not have a strong post you will not be able to properly escape, because you will be too weak. When you put your leg down you make a strong anchor. While this seems like a small step it is crucial to remember.
The last detail is specifically pointed out in this video by Bernardo Faria. This is something people often forget to do. The leg not posted on the ground should be extended straight outwards. The mistake that people often do is to tuck that leg. This weakens your ability to escape by crunching up your body and hip escapes need to be explosive and powerful in order to be effective. This is a very crucial detail and Bernardo Faria understands it well. So watch and listen closely.
The man knows his escapes. Because of this he’s won multiple championships with his world class defense. As you progress through your jiu jitsu career you will always know that you can rely on the hip escape to get out of some really bad positions.
Bernardo is a 5 time Black Belt World Champion - think about that for a second.. He’s won five.. - America has only ever won two. So it is safe to say that his escapes are very solid. He knows how to get out of anything and pretty much always does.
