In the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu there is one name that is synonymous with grappling mastery. The Gracie family is infamous for revolutionizing the sport. Gregor Rangel, also known as Gregor Gracie is no exception to this. Gregor is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie. He is a world champion in the lower belt divisions and has also had a successful career in mixed martial arts (MMA). Gregor is not a member of the Gracie family by blood, but is the half brother of Rolles and Igor Gracie, both sons of the legendary Rolls Gracie. The list of Gregor’s achievements is long, with some of his most prominent accolades being World Champion (2004 & 2005 purple belt), Pan American Champion (2006 brown belt), Brazilian National Champion (2005 purple belt), Brazilian National Teams Champion (2003 blue belt, 2004 purple belt), Grapplers Quest Champion (4x), World No Gi Championship 2nd Place (2008), World Master Championship 2nd Place (2016 Master 1), ADCC 3rd Place (2009), and Pan American 2nd Place (2001 blue belt).

Gregor Gracie first starts out this technique by establishing his lasso guard. He uses a double sleeve grip to attack the sweep. The first thing Gregor does is bait his opponent by taking his foot of the inside of the bicep and bringing it across the body and underneath the lasso. His legs are almost touching each other. It is very important after you set your legs to keep your elbow open and also your knee open. If you close one or both it opens up and opportunity for your training partner to easily smash and pass your guard. From here Gregor uses the foot on his training partner’s hip to rotate his body, brining it closer to his opponent. He feeds his hand under his training partner in between his legs, grabbing the gi pants. Now all it takes for Gregor Gracie to finish the sweep is to open the knee and bring his other knee across. Make sure you keep holding the sleeve and the gi pants once you complete the sweep. Plant your hand on the mat and sit up and extend your leg straight down to your training partner’s hip as you come on top to side control.
As you can probably tell this is a very effective lasso sweep. What I like the most about this one is how Gregor baits his opponent by removing his foot from the bicep. If you do this technique with precision, it will be highly effective whether you are in a live roll or in a competition. This is a great sweep to add to your arsenal, especially if you love to play lasso guard. This is not a common sweep which means your opponent likely will not see it coming. So play around with this the next time you are training. Remember to work it slow and get the feeling of controlling your opponent as you complete the sweep.
