ADCC Spotlight: Renato Canuto

,

The ADCC World Championships are coming up this weekend, so let's take a look at some of our BJJ Fanatics family members who have been invited to compete.

Next up is Renato Canuto, who is included in the -77 kg division.

For Canuto, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the family business.  Canuto began his martial arts career studying Judo, only turning to BJJ once his father, Valdir "Tio Chico" Canuto, started coaching a kids' BJJ class.

Canuto's father recognized his son's talent and signed him up for his first competition after only a few months of training.  Canuto won this first competition and the thrill of winning fired his desire to compete.

Canuto's fixation on BJJ and competition dominated his childhood.  Instead of a typical childhood of playing with friends and having fun, Canuto's youth was all about training and competing.  His goal was nothing less than being a world champion in Jiu Jitsu, which he achieved as a brown belt in 2016.

Later that same year, Valdir Canuto awarded his son his black belt.

Given his love for competing, it's no surprise that Canuto has a long list of accolades that started early.  As a blue belt, he won second place in the CBJJ Juvenile Brazilian Nationals.  Then, as a purple belt, he won second place in the IBJJF Pan Championships and first place in the IBJJF Sao Paulo International Open.

As a brown belt, Canuto hit his stride, winning first in the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Los Angeles, The UAEJJF Las Vegas Pro, the IBJJF Seattle International Open, the IBJJF Las Vegas International Open, the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, and the IBJJF World Championship.

Earning his black belt didn't stop Canuto's competitive drive, either.  Since then, he has won first place in the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Los Angeles, the USBJJF/IBJJF American Nationals, the KASAI Pro 170 lbs Grand Prix (twice), and the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship.
