She defeated Ana Carolina Viera 2-0 in the middleweight division (66.5 kg) with an early takedown to win the division.  In the absolute, Bia defeated Jessica Flowers by 2 advantages with a near back take in the final minute of the match.

With these championships, Bia becomes the winningest female in the IBJJF’s No Gi history (of 12 years)- as she had previously won her weight class (61.5 kg)  in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Beatriz Mesquita’s biography

Bia was born in Brazil on April 7, 1991.  She began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 1996 with her brother when she was 5 years old.  Although her brother would stop training after one year, Bia stuck with it- even competing at a young age.  By the time she was 10 years old, she was training under Coach Luis Fernando from the Vento Sul academy and she had won several major tournaments including the Brazilian National Junior Championships and three State Championships.

Her coach, Luis Fernando, saw Bia’s huge potential in the sport and encouraged her to train under legend, Leticia Ribeiro, in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.  Under Leticia, Bia would win her major championships, and receive her brown (in June 2009) and black belts (March 2011) under her.

Bia is one of the winningest female competitors of all time with over 20 titles at the black belt level, including four IBJJF black belt gi world championships, ADCC Submissions Champion in 2017, and four IBJJF black belt no gi world championships.
