Crazy Arm Bar From Half Guard By Will Grundhauser

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, no submission is more common and better known than the arm bar. As one of the first submissions you often learn, the arm bar is essentially a house hold name for anyone even remotely familiar with grappling. The mechanics of the arm bar are simple enough: use a part of your body as a fulcrum point and your opponent’s arm as a level to bend their arm in the opposite direction their elbow works. In a real life street fight scenario, you would use this to break your attackers arm. In the sport of BJJ, an arm bar is very often a highly efficient way to get the tap. Because it is so effective, every top level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor has a variety of arm bar techniques at their disposal.

So why exactly is it that the arm bar is so effective? The arm bar is known for its versatility. Once you understand the mechanics of the arm bar, you start to see how available it is no matter what position you find yourself attacking from. Because it is such a common submission, your opponent is going to recognize the set up as soon as they see it, causing them to panic and react hastily in an attempt to defend the submission before it is too late. Even when you do not hit a successful arm bar, you throw your opponent into a frenzy which can strike fear into the heart of any man or woman.

With that in mind, it should go without saying that it is vital for you to understand the principles of the arm bar. Today we are going to look at a crazy arm bar from half guard from a professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor known as Will Grundhauser. Will owns Grindhouse Academy, located in Billings, Montana. He is a pioneer in MMA and jiu-jitsu in Montana and his school is producing a bunch of tough fighters and competitors. Will is here with 5 Time World Champion Bernardo Faria to demonstrate one of his most effective arm bar techniques from half guard.

Watch the video below of Will Grundhauser demonstrating his crazy arm bar from half guard and then we will break down his technique. Check it out now!

Will Grundhauser starts this demonstration from a standing position. He uses two hands on the same side of the gi collar to establish his grip, and then pulls his opponent into half guard. When he pulls half guard he does it in a manner that causes his opponent to go way over his head, forcing him to post on the mat with both his hands. Will Grundhauser uses his elbow to post against his training partner as he starts to get up and take the back of his opponent who is in a turtle position. From here he anchors with his foot, allowing him to pivot into the correct angle to secure the arm bar. Now he sits back to the mat, keeping his grip on the arm allowing him to easily finish the arm bar.

What I like the most about this technique is just how fast it happens. Your training partner might expect you to pull guard but there is no way they will see this arm bar coming. It is too fast, and your training partner does not have a lot of options for defending it while he is stuck in the turtle position. Keep in mind that when training this technique, you will want to work on precision before you add in speed and fluidity. As you can tell, Will has been using this technique for a long time, which allows him to maneuver so quickly around Bernardo. Your technique probably will not look like this at first, which is plenty okay. Get a strong sense of what it takes to pull your opponent into half guard as well as moving around his body into the arm bar position. Remember this one the next time you are in a live roll or in a competition. It is a highly effective way to get a quick arm bar submission. I hope you find this useful. Thank you Will Grundhauser for demonstrating this technique for us here today!

It doesn’t matter how big or small you are. It doesn’t matter how athletic or strong you are. You simply use these easy secrets and instantly start destroying guys from side control.

Will’s going to show you exactly what you need to do in order to feel like you are filled with 2 tons of cement when dominating side control. He has so much pressure and uses tiny little details that make him feel like he is ten times heavier than he is. And after you establish that kind of control, submissions are just a formality. After you start using these techniques… The guy on bottom will want to get out of side control anyway he can—even if it’s tapping because of claustrophobia.
