Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz to Square Off For a 3rd Time
You recognize the names. These men are pioneers in the UFC, and they’ve both contributed immensely to the growth and history of the sport. We thought maybe their time had passed, but MMA legends, Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz will once again return to the MMA arena to engage in combat for a 3rd time.
The bout will be brought to you by Golden Boy Promotions. Golden Boy was established by Oscar De La Hoya in 2002. Predominately a boxing promotion, this will be Golden Boy’s first time expanding their reach into MMA.
Chuck Liddell has not stepped into the fighting spotlight in almost 9 years. He sustained 3 vicious knockouts culminating with one from Rich Franklin, that led to his retirement in 2010. Liddell was victorious in both his previous bouts against Ortiz, winning by KO at their first meeting in 2004, and TKO two and a half years later. At a recent UFC hall of Fame event, an intense Liddell states in an interview, “He should have let the sleeping dog lie”. After being asked about his 15-year rivalry with Ortiz.
Tito Ortiz has had much less of a layoff from the cage. After a string of comeback bouts, he fought Chael Sonnen in a 2017 Bellator main event. Before the event, Tito announced that his would be his last MMA fight. Ortiz won the match via rear naked choke in the first round. In an interview with Fighthype.com Tito expresses his excitement for the upcoming challenge, and refers to Chuck as his “enemy”, and that this is his “opportunity for redemption”.
It’s intriguing to see these two legends get back at it. The names certainly invoke a bit of nostalgia. Good luck gentlemen, the world will be watching.
