Dana White Explores Khabib Nurmagomedov's Next Fight

Dana White spoke recently to ESPN about Khabib’s next opponent. He said, “I think you have to look at the Conor McGregor-Khabib Nurmagomedov fight. Broke records, incredible fight. Khabib wins which sets up possible fights with Tony and Poirier and Conor. Like I said in every division I could crank out two or three different things that are fun and exciting for either the end of this year or next year.”
He continues, “I don’t know if the immediate rematch happens because we got to see what the Nevada State Athletic Commission hands down in December when that hearing happens. So I’m not even thinking about that. I’m thinking about possibilities in the future but right now not even worth thinking about until we find out what happens in Nevada.

There has certainly been a lot of speculation about what is next for Khabib Nurmagomedov. There have been reports of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. Some have named Georges St-Pierre as the next opponent.
We have argued in the past that a Tony versus Khabib fight makes the most sense. Tony was the former interim champion. He did not lose the title in the ring but was stripped due to injury. Tony holds an impressive record of the most consecutive wins in UFC lightweight history. It would be an interesting clash of styles to see Tony’s 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu against Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Sambo. Tony has a black belt in 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. This is a form of Jiu Jitsu that does not use the gi and leverages many non-traditional techniques. Khabib has the title of International Master of Sport in Sambo. There are two variations of Sambo: Sport and Combat. Both utilize a gi jacket. Sport Sambo has been characterized as similar to catch wresting. It allows leg locks but does not allow choke holds. It primary focus is on throwing and submissions. Combat Sambo is similar to modern MMA with an emphasis on strikes and grappling. If styles make fights then this is a dream matchup for any grappling aficionado.
Ultimately, we will have to wait awhile longer to see what the future holds for Khabib. As a grappler, it is always a pleasure to watch his Sambo in action.
