How To Avoid Getting Smashed by The Bigger Guys by 9x World Champion Bruno Malfacine

When you roll with an opponent who is bigger and stronger than you are, you are face to face with the true realities of your techniques. Do your techniques ACTUALLY work? Or are you required to make adjustments so that they work against a "powerhouse" who is able to resist? It is much easier to force a technique against someone who is 20 or 30 pounds lighter than you are than it is to force that same technique against someone who is heavier.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a discipline made for the smaller man to be able to beat the bigger man. It doesn’t matter if you are smaller, slower, or older, if you know more about applying leverage and technique then you can still sweep and submit anyone. As a career roosterweight, no one knows this better than Bruno Malfacine

If you are a smaller guy who gets smashed often by bigger guys then Bruno Malfacine is a great competitor to study. Bruno competes in the lightest division in Jiu Jitsu but can sweep guys bigger than him, even in the heaviest division – ultra heavy. Check out Bruno Malfacine’s advice in the video below!

Here are some tips for improving your technique:

Use your opponent’s weight against him. Any time Bruno Malfacine is grip fighting with a bigger opponent he is looking for any situation where he can get him off balance. Something as simple as an arm drag might allow you to take advantage of your opponent’s size. You want to look for an opportunity to get to their back. Bruno also keeps the fight outside of his guard. He never allows his opponent an opportunity to get in close. Every time Bruno opponent tries to close the distance he controls the arms and hands to make it difficult for any contact to be made.

Just remember, if you are the smaller guy you are also lighter and faster. Use this to your advantage, start by dictating the distance of your opponent. It can be a real eye opener when rolling against a stronger opponent, but it is an essential part of learning jiu jitsu. You might have an unrealistic idea how good you are unless you are put to the test with someone bigger, taller, heavier, or stronger. Certain techniques become useless, and your will power is tested. So stay relaxed, and don’t let yourself become frustrated!
