Jiu Jitsu Gi’s: How To Care For

,

When it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi’s, people ask me about proper care. People that are new to the art make some mistakes that sadly can ruin gi’s. The last you want to do is ruin your gi, and have to buy a new one. A small mistake can cost you over $100 to get a new one. So let’s talk about how to care for a BJJ gi.

5) Machine wash, but know how –

Yes, it is okay to machine wash your gi. I do it all the time. But know what to do and what not to do with your washing machine. First, use warm or cold water. Do NOT use hot water. Do not use fabric softener, and do not use bleach either. Standard laundry detergent will work just fine.

4) Air dry –

Another quick way to ruin your gi is to throw it in the dryer. By throwing it in the dryer, you will shrink your gi to comically small proportions and it will not fit. After your gi is washed, hang it up and let the natural air do its job. That way, your gi won’t be altered in a negative way.

3) Make sure your gi is dry before you wear it again –

Before you throw your gi in the bag and go to training, make sure your gi is completely dry. Wearing a damp gi is a bad idea. A damp gi is a breeding ground for bacteria, as bacteria thrives in moisture.

2) Washing your belt –

This is a topic that causes much controversy, but for health sake, wash your belt. Some teachers say washing your belt is disrespectful, because it is like washing away the experience. But by not washing your belt, you are exposing yourself and others to a ton of bacteria. Not a good idea.

1) Buy a back up gi(s) –

If you are training twice a week or more, it is probably a good idea to own a back up gi. It is in case your gi is dirty and you haven’t had the chance to wash it, you will have another clean gi to wear to training. It just makes sense. You have more than one pair of jeans in your closet, so buy one more gi. It doesn’t have to be a super expensive one either. Just make sure you have an extra.

For your health, and your training partners health, follow these tips. You will stay clean, healthy and won’t draw the ire of everyone else at your school. Check out some truly great gi’s below!
