Concepts About Open Guard by Priit Mihkelson From BJJ Globetrotters
Open Guard is nothing new in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene. There are many different ways you can play open guard. Take the De La Riva guard, for instance. It is one of the most commonly used open guards from high level BJJ practitioners in competition. Other types of open guard include spider guard, butterfly guard, inverted guard, cross guard, and reverse de la riva. The main thing all these open guards have in common is that both legs are engaged in controlling your opponent. In open guard you do not have your legs crossed behind your opponent’s back. Nor are you in half guard where both legs control one leg. Today we are going to take a look at some open guard concepts from BJJ Globetrotter Priit Mihkelson. Pritt is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under SBG President and founder Matt Thornton. He has been involved in martial arts for over eighteen years, with ten of those years devoted to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, grappling, and MMA.
Pritt Mihkelson describes his training as “functionalistic minimalism” – based on fundamental postures and movements that ever grappler needs to know.
Watch the video below and then we will break down Pritt’s concepts. Check it out now!
Pritt Mihkelson starts out his demonstration from bottom open guard. Typically what the guy on top will do is get a hold of your ankles and stack your legs to pass. One main thing you can do to win more time for recovery is to keep your shoulders and head pinned to the mat so you can slide as your opponent tries to stack you. It is important to remember to keep your hamstring muscles relaxed in order for this to work correctly. This will allow you to break your training partner’s grips and re-establish your open guard. Pay attention to the leg work Pritt Mihkelson uses to escape his opponent’s grip. This is a simple yet effective open guard concept for preventing yourself from getting stack passed.
