Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier at UFC 236

The Rematch is on with Interim Lightweight Title on the line!
The Lightweight division in the UFC is easily the most stacked division in MMA, and it just got A LOT deeper. Max Holloway who is the current Featherweight (145) champ who is quickly becoming one of the biggest names in the sport. He will make the jump to Lightweight and try to avenge his first professional loss.
Holloway and Poirier originally clashed at UFC 143 back in 2012! Holloway was 21 years old making his UFC debut whereas Dustin had three UFC victories at that point. Poirier walked away with an triangle armbar victory. Both athletes have been VERY busy since then.

Max Holloway stayed at 145 and is currently riding a 13 fight win streak with three consecutive title defenses. Dustin has also kept busy racking up a 12-4 record since the first Holloway fight. Poirier has three consecutive finishes over Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Eddie Alvarez. Pettis and Alvarez are both former lightweight champs.
Interim titles can rub some folks the wrong way as we have seen it cause turmoil in recent history. Tony Ferguson was the interim champ before being stripped after a catastrophic knee injury leading into his bout with current champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. Khabib is currently serving a suspension for his leading role in the extra curricular activities directly after his first title defense against Conor Mcgregor. So the need for an interim belt is basically a necessity at this point.
The winner of the bout is sure to clash with current champ Khabib. Holloway and Khabib came very close to fighting after Tony Ferguson had to pull out from their most recent scheduled bout. The Khabib fight was pulled due to Holloway having complications during the weight cut. It seems as though with a win at UFC 236 in Atlanta the bout could finally come to fruition.
Stay tuned for an eventual breakdown of how these two match up!
