In this video, Formiga tells us that he has been training jiu jitsu since he was only 10 years old. “I like jiu jitsu, after the first competition I really started to love jiu jitsu,” says Formiga. He goes on to describe being attracted to the adrenaline and fear before a fight that keeps him from sleeping well the week prior. “I train hard in jiu jitsu because of competition.” No matter if Barbosa rolls light or hard he is always preparing himself for the next match. He says, “I will compete for my whole life. It does not matter how old I am. I will do my best to beat the other guy, I don’t care.”
Barbosa’s feeling for competition never changes. The stories he shares about competing at a young age as a blue belt are truly inspirational. It shows how that mindset is fostered over many years of experience, and pushing past the losses to eventually achieve victory.
