How many sports did you play in high school or college that you still currently stay active with? Competition is something that comes up often when discussing training for a lifetime. Since BJJ is broken down by rank, age, and weight there are plenty of opportunities to embark on a competitive journey. Older practitioners have a chance to compete with others who are the same rank and close to the same age. Competing in BJJ is a great way to elevate your overall Jiu-Jitsu, but doesn’t have to be your ultimate goal when training.

The blue belt blues is a real phenomenon that happens in Jiu-Jitsu. It happens when someone finally achieves the rank of blue belt and slowly but surely disappear from the academy. Folks who start BJJ hear can set goals in a way that encourages this. The blue belt becomes their ultimate goal and when they finally reach it, they are left with the question “what now?”. By setting this type of goal that has an end is great for short term goals, but it’s always a good idea to have long term goals as well.

One sure fire way to enjoy BJJ for the long haul is to fall in love with learning. Countless practitioner’s talk about how a decade into training they are still encountering new techniques. Even the most technique hungry practitioners will constantly refine and refresh their approaches to old classics. BJJ is truly an art because there is no end to it. This can deflate some people, but if training Jiu-Jitsu for a lifetime is your goal this provides a lot of things to learn. So become a sponge for information and soak up as much as you can.
