Jiu Jitsu Is Greater Than Anxiety
After We Train Jiu-Jitsu, Lots Of Things Kind Of Become Trivial...
What if anything gives you anxiety? I never had issues with anxiety but there is one thing that causes an uneasy feeling in my soul. Driving to unfamiliar destinations alone. I know that with all the technology at our fingertips this really isn’t an issue for most people. I know people who travel alone all the time and sometimes just for fun. I have never been that person and I have always had a feeling in the pit of my stomach when I had to do so.

I recently got promoted at work and had to go off site to be trained for my new position. 3 ½ hours away. Away from home, away from all my familiar locations, familiar surroundings and of course my family and my friends. Granted it’s only for a week and it’s not that far. Still I had that initial quiver in my gut that made me wish there would be a miracle to keep me home and still be able to learn my new role at my place of employment. Not the case…
I talked about having to take this trip alone with my family, my friends at work, my Jiu Jitsu Family and all of them had more confidence in me than I had in myself. the more I talked about having to go and the more they all reassured me that “I got this” there was still that bit of uncertainty and fear. I had a friend who recently had to go to Florida for her new position, she survived! I have a friend/coach who travels like it’s his job and he makes it look so easy so why not me? All I have to do is drive! Something I do every day of my life! it started to feel different in me. I started to believe that I really could do this and there was nothing in which to be afraid.
There is something about this trip that is different. There is something about me that is different.
I Do Jiu Jitsu
I chatted with my professor and several teammates at the gym about my upcoming travel plans and the fact that I was standing in a Jiu Jitsu gym and talking about anxiety over something I do every day, drive, seemed a bit ridiculous to me. Jiu Jitsu has made me come out of comfort zones and face fears in ways I didn’t think possible. My exact words to my professor/friend and my Jiu Jitsu family was “as much as I had anxiety over having to do this drive alone, I am getting a reliable car, I have a new phone with GPS and I do Jiu Jitsu”…the anxious feelings seemed to dissipate the more I said that. I do Jiu Jitsu.

I have survived the most uncomfortable situations, I have gotten out of bad positions and into better positions. I have competed, lost but never by submission and I was not going to let this drive defeat me, submit me or cause me any more uncomfortableness. This is one of those moments that I truly believe Jiu Jitsu has helped me grow and fear nothing!
Just Another Test
Oh, by the way, my GPS voice navigation didn’t work on the way to my destination, so I had to follow the directions as I drove and still that anxious feeling was nowhere to be found! I thank all my family and friends who believe in me and I thank my Jiu Jitsu Professors and Coaches for making me believe in me by putting me in the most uncomfortable but not impossible to survive positions I could ever imagine being in.
Jiu Jitsu Is A Life Changer
Trust that Jiu Jitsu can change your life, it can help you grow and it can help you overcome the fears you think are too scary to face. Trust me they are not, and you can do whatever you need to move past, to move forward and move on. I am currently in my hotel room, alone, writing this article, after having done my work out, ate good food brought to my room and relaxed by letting the hot water of the whirlpool in my room help me wash away the not so long hours on the road! This is a good trip for so many reasons. Step out of your comfort zone, get to the mat and learn to live off the mat without fear but with drive and determination!
