Learn The Two Most Simple Yet Neglected Chokes In BJJ Today – These Two Moves Could Tap Everyone In Your Gym
Most people know Alex for his crucifix, however he is also notorious for having a strong loop choke submission. Alex has a great instructional series called “The Crucifix and Loop Choke” available exclusively on BJJFanatics.com. His instructional series is packed with tons of high level information on setting up attacks from the crucifix, and one of the easiest submissions to get in BJJ, the loop choke. Let’s check out some of Alex’s technique for both the crucifix and the loop choke. Here we go!
Loop Choke From Top Split Guard by Alexandre Vieira
Whenever Alex is playing someone with an open guard, he likes to set up this loop choke by giving his training partner a little bit of space and making him think he is going to hit a sweep. Alex steps in with his leg in between his training partner’s legs. When his opponent attacks he leg he secures a cross collar lapel grip. This allows Alex to easily wrap his arm around his opponent’s head in order to hit a choke. In a case where his opponent’s head is already inside and tight against his leg, he will push against his head, grab his chin, and come under his arm pit to kill all the space. Now he can easy grab behind his opponent’s knee and push him over, using his elbow to apply pressure on the ribs to finish the choke. As you can tell this is a very effective way of dealing with an opponent from top split guard.
Reverse Half Guard Loop Choke by Alexandre Vieira
This is a loop choke you can hit when you are in your opponent’s reverse half guard. In this case your opponent has your hips and your reverse leg to try and sweep you. Alex crosses his forearm on his opponent’s neck, but he does not use a lot of pressure. He puts his elbow on the floor to post and then feeds the lapel with his other hand. Alex gives his opponent space to try to turn and sweep him. When his training partner comes up, Alex now has the perfect set up for the loop choke but stuffing the head inside his arm. He has to get his legs in between his opponent’s legs in order to prevent him from escaping the choke. To finish the choke Vieira simply squeezes with his elbow to tighten up the choke, causing his training partner to tap.
Crucifix from Back with Hooks by Alexandre Vieira
This is a great technique for hitting the crucifix from back control when your hooks are set. Typically you will be in a hand battle with your opponent as he tries to protect his neck from being choked. Alex prefers to sit back so his opponent is lying on top of him. He uses one hand to control his training partner’s wrist and the other than to wrap around the neck as if going for a choke. With this position Alex can move to his side and fake an attack on his opponent. This will cause his training partner to pull his hands down. This movement allows Alex to take the arm of his training partner and capture it with his legs. Once your training partners arm comes down you want to bring your leg up and over to hook it. Make sure your foot is hooking on the outside of your training partner’s hips. This is a minor detail, but very important. It allows your opponent to free himself to the opposite side... or so he thinks. In reality this sets him up exactly into the crucifix position.
I am sure by now you probably have a better understanding of just how high level Alexandre Vieira’s techniques are when it comes to hitting the loop choke or the crucifix. If you liked this technique then I definitely recommend checking out Alex’s instructional series called “The Crucifix and Loop Choke” available exclusively on BJJFanatics.com.
