Spyder Invitational BJJ Championship Qualifier
Posted by Fanatics Authors on
On March 2nd, Spyder, one of the largest professional jiu jitsu promotions in Asia held their season opening event, the Spyder Invitational BJJ Championship Qualifier at the K-Art Hall in Olympic Park, Seoul, Korea. One of the most unique features of these events is that Spyder invites top purple, brown, and black belts to all compete together- creating unique matchups not seen in the IBJJF tournaments.
Travis Stevens has simple concepts that he applies to his throws, takedowns and guard passing. His approach is simple, and makes him one of the best grapplers ever.
In this event, there was a 76 kilogram and a 100 kilogram division, with the top three finishers (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) advancing to the Spyder BJJ Invitational Finals in November. In the 76 kilogram division, there were standouts including the former black belt world champion Augusto "Tanquinho" Mendes, multiple time IBJJF black belt bronze medalist and No Gi Champion Osvaldo "Queixinho" Moizinho, European Champion Levi Jones-Leary, and brown belt world champion Matheus Lutes, as well as Lucas Rocha, Mathias Luna, Daniel Sathler, and Sanghyeon Lee.
In the 100 kilogram division, there was the IBJJF and ADCC World Champion Claudio Calasans, IBJJF No Gi World Champion Tim Spriggs, IBJJF Silver medalist Marcos Tinoco, Kasai Pro champion Matheus Dinis, as well as up and coming stars such as Rudson Mateus, Roberto Jimenez, Anderson Munis and Hyungcheul Kim.
76 Kilogram Results
Marcelo Garcia brown belt stand up, Matheus Lutes, was able to pull off the upset by defeating two black belts on his way to winning the 76 kilogram bracket. Lutes, who recently won double gold (weight class and absolute) at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championships, faced GF team purple belt Daniel Sathler in his first bout which he won by kimura. He then defeated Tanquino Mendes, the 2013 IBJJF Black Belt World Champion in a tough decision, and faced Queixinho Moizinho in the finals. Queixinho was able to submit Sangheon Lee via armlock in his opening match, and then defeated Levi Jones-Leary, the 2019 IBJJF Europeans Champion (who pulled off the improbable upset at that tournament by defeating legend Lucas Lepri in the finals) by referee's decision. In the finals, it was a close back and forth match, with both Lutes and Queixinho sweeping each other. At the end, Lutes was able to win with 3 advantages, with the points tied at 2 - 2.
100 Kilogram Results
In the 100 kilogram division, Tim Spriggs, of Team Lloyd Irvin proved to be the upset winner, as he used his aggressive stand up game to defeat 2019 IBJJF European Champion Rudson Mateus in his opening match by a score of 2-0. He then defeated Marcelo Garcia black belt standout and Kasai Pro Champion, Matheus Diniz by a score of 3-0 from a guard pass. In the finals of the 100 kg bracket, Spriggs would go on to face 2015 IBJJF Black Belt World Champion and ADCC champion Claudio Calasans. Claudio had defeated the World Silver Medalist, Marcos Tinoco by a score of 6-0 in his opening match, and then defeated Anderson Munis by referee's decision to reach the finals. The finals was largely a stand up battle, with Spriggs testing his skills against Calasans, a well regarded judo black belt. In the end, Spriggs was able to take the back of Calasans from a well executed collar snap down, and was able to secure both hooks for the 4-0 victory.
