#1: Flying Arm Bar by Mario Delgado
The flying arm bar is a submission that many people believe require athleticism or flexibility but it is actually easy. The key to hitting this arm bar has to do with timing. You can’t wait until you are in a full collar tie if you want to hit this submission. As soon as you have established first contact you need to move. When Delgado jumps he hangs from the top of his opponent’s head. This motion causes his opponent’s head to come down. Make your opponent step forward to prevent him from stacking you. When you get to the floor sometimes you opponent will roll, and sometimes your opponent will remain standing. But the key detail is he will not be able to defend because of the position of his arm.
#2: High Guard Arm Bar by Mario Delgado
The high guard arm bar is useful for when your opponent is being defensive and cupping your biceps in closed guard. It can be frustrating when your opponent does not engage from the closed guard. But Mario has just the answer with this unique take on the classic arm bar. As the guard passer stands Mario immediately climbs his legs up to a higher position. This changes the angle of his guard, making his opponent’s knee pressure much less effective. As soon as Mario gets his legs up around his opponent’s arms he closes them back up and either goes for a sweep or attacks the arm bar.
It is good to have more than one option here because your opponent is going to be trying their hardest to counter you. Typically your training partner is going to try and pressure down on you. As soon as this happens, Mario secures an over hand grip on his opponent’s elbow while his other arm swims to the opposite leg. Mario creates a deep hook to spin his body underneath his opponent. Mario finishes the arm bar from an inverted position. Mario passes to the other side of the head ensuring that the arm bar stays tight, forcing his opponent forwards. This causes his training partner to lose his balance and also puts the trapped arm in a difficult position to escape.
#3: Knee Slice Bait To Darce Choke by Mario Delgado
The knee slice bait to darce choke is great because it can be done quickly or slowly, depending on how you would like to approach it. It is also great because it totally baits your opponent into thinking they are going to have the advantage. From bottom half guard, your opponent will typically set an under hook. With a deep under hook it can be difficult to hit the darce choke because space is too tight from having an incorrect angle. To fix this, Delgado fakes his opponent into thinking he can come up to his knees to set the under hook. When this happens Mario then immediately transitions to a front head lock position. This allows him to start feeding his hand through for the darce choke. He switches to his right side, throws his top leg over his training partner, leaning in to tighten up the choke.
