Jiu-Jitsu At UFC 229? What Can We Expect
Posted by Fanatics Authors on
Will this event be a grappling fan's dream?
UFC 229 is October 6th, and will be a big night for the UFC. The main card is staked with great fights, headlined by the much anticipated fight between UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and the challenger Conor McGregor. But, can we expect some great jiu-jitsu from this card? Here are a few top picks for some high level grappling for this event.
Tony Ferguson Vs. Anthony Pettis
This fight has a lot of potential on the ground. 10th Planet Black Belt Tony Ferguson has a very strong jiu-jitsu game, headlined by his very successful D’arce chokes. On his current, and impressive, 10 fight win streak, he has submitted 6 of his opponents. 4 submissions coming from his D’arce choke. He has a few other wins via rear naked choke, and triangle choke.

Anthony Pettis is also no slouch on the ground, with this biggest submission finish coming from a slick armbar finish of Benson Henderson to win the UFC Lightweight Championship in 2013. He is coming off a submission win in his last fight against Michael Chiesa, so the momentum is there for another potential submission win.
Conor McGregor Vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
Lastly, the main event also has some potential for some great grappling exchanges. Khabib Nurmagomedov is very well known for his wrestling and Sambo background, which he has used with dominating success in his spotless fighting career. While most of his grappling skills are used to control his opponents, he does have a few wins by submission on his record. He is very talented, and is capable of pulling off a submission win on the 6th.

The real question is, can the grappling skills of Conor McGregor keep up with the advanced pedigree of Khabib Nurmagomedov? Everyone sees McGregor as a striker, but he assures everyone that he has skills on the ground. Being a jiu-jitsu brown belt, he must have some skills on the ground. But can they compare? Can he keep Khabib Nurmagomedov off of him during the fight? We will find out soon!
